Managing your Mental Health in the First Week at College

Are you one of the many students who are already stressed out about their first week of college? Are you overwhelmed by the new environment, new peers, and new instructors? Here are some tips for how to overcome the stress and anxiety that comes with your first week of college.

Get Involved

Stress and anxiety are easier to get ahold of when you have friends to help you through it. Getting to know people and making new friends is easier when you participate in on-campus activities. Find out what clubs and organizations are available and join whatever suits you best. Meet new people, make friends, and stay active with sports, and maybe even start your own club if there isn't one that suits your tastes. Joining clubs and sports can really set the tone for the remainder of your time at college.

Stick to a Schedule

People thrive with routine. Whether you work best with a simple outline of your day or a completely regimented schedule with every last second accounted for, managing your time is a great way to keep you from falling behind which significantly reduces your stress. Just be sure to plan for some fun and relaxation. You’ll burn out too quickly if you only allow time for work.

Eat Healthy

It should come as no surprise that your physical and mental health are linked. You can’t eat terribly and expect to not suffer physically and mentally. It is important to eat a well balanced diet, and try not to skip meals. You’re going to be studying a lot and your body and brain will need fuel to keep up.

Settle into Your New Home

If you’re living away from home for the first time, setting up your personal space will be crucial to help curb any separation anxiety or feelings of homesickness. Get your living space organized to your liking and work with any roommates to decorate your new digs. Doing so will help you get to know each other better, and will help you feel comfortable in your new space that much quicker. Plus you’ll get to check a box on your long list of to-dos, which can ease your anxiety and reduce your stress.

Your first week of college can be extremely stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Keep these tips in mind when you feel like the walls are closing in on you. A lot of new things are being thrown at you, and it’s important that you know you don’t have to be an expert in everything right away. Remember to lean on friends and take a breath. It’ll all be okay.
