The following message is on behalf of Dr. Stuart Van Horn, Chancellor of the West Hills Community College District:
We are fortunate that our organization is among the most adaptable in the California community college system. Overnight, the Governor signed an executive order. Effective last evening (Thursday, March 19, 2020) and until further notice, the California State Public Health Officer and Director of the California Department of Public Health has ordered all individuals living in the State of California to stay home or at their place of residence, except as needed to maintain continuity of operation of the federal critical infrastructure sector. Because the California Community College system, including West Hills, is included in the 16 critical infrastructure sectors, planned coverage at all sites of the essential campus services, staggered work schedules, and personnel being on campus are not affected by the State’s order and will begin on Monday, March 23, 2020.
The order does not alter our operational plans or disrupt our continuity of instruction. Continuity of instruction is essential. Virtual remote instruction for classes will continue until April 27.
The Governor has asked that child development centers remain open and continue to operate until further notice. The centers, with the exception of the Avenal site, will reopen on Monday, March 23, 2020 and resume normal hours and operations until further notice. CDC staff will not be working remotely.
Those employees who continue to work on campus and at the district office must adhere to recommended hygiene etiquette and social distancing as we have been consistently communicating. In addition, the district has implemented additional cleaning and sanitizing protocols. Please remember that any employee who feels ill should not report to work.
Additional updates will be released regularly to all employees. Chancellor’s Executive Cabinet members will meet daily via Zoom beginning Monday, March 23. We want to hear from you. Please continue to stay in touch. The best place to raise questions and concerns is through the form on our portal. Student messaging will continue. A COVID-19 update site has been created for students and staff. I encourage you to browse the student site regularly. Marketing and communications is continuously posting new information to assist them, updating frequently asked questions, and other COVID-19 resources.
Adaptability to change is itself a hallmark of successful education; so be safe, serve each other and our students well, and be relentless in our pursuit of student success.
Dr. Stuart Van Horn
