West Hills College Lemoore celebrated National Disability Awareness Month in October with two events: WHCL’s annual Operation Awareness Disability Awareness Day and a visit from Tommy Edison, known as “The Blind Film Critic.”

“The greatest barriers people with disabilities encounter are other people and people induced,” said Dr. Lataria Hall, Associate Dean of Categorical Programs at WHCL. “Over 40 years ago, the U.S. government passed the Americans with Disabilities Act, guaranteeing equal opportunity for people with disabilities. Since the passage of the law more and more people with disabilities have been able to live independently and access education but not without challenges. WHCL has been celebrating Disability Awareness Month since 2012, educating our students, staff, and community about disabilities and promoting better access for our students.”

The annual Operation Awareness event was held on Oct. 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the WHCL Student Union. This event featured food, games, and information about services and programs available to individuals with disabilities. It also featured a visit from guide/therapy dogs in training.

Operation Awareness Day is also a chance to learn about the many supportive services offered by the WHCL, which include access to assistive technology, text in alternate formats, testing services and more.

WHCL will also hosted Tommy Edison, “The Blind Film Critic” as a guest speaker. He spoke on Oct. 24 in Room 253 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Edison produces online video reviews, reviewing movies with his unique perspective. He is also a radio personality.
