Letters from Past Students: The Impact of Scholarships

The impact of scholarships: learn how the Warkentin Scholarship impacted these students

Napoleon Rodriguez

As a recipient of the Don Warkentin Scholarship 2017, and an alumni of West Hills College Lemoore, the scholarship has helped me not only financially, but emotionally by giving me the confidence to move forward as a transfer student and recognizing my own academic excellence in the two years I was at West Hills College. It has made me understand that hard work really does pay off and that in the end, people will recognize the potential in you. The scholarship has also helped me financially so that my parents and I can avoid taking out student loans and I can pursue my bachelor’s degree debt free. I would like to again thank the Warkentin family on selecting me as their recipient of their prestigious memorial scholarship award. They have given me the financial support that I need to achieve my educational degree and I am forever thankful.

Kimberly Alfors

My name is Kimberly Alfors and I was one of many to receive the Don Warkentin Scholarship Award. This award meant a lot to me because Don Warkentin was an amazing human who I was able to encounter while at West Hills. Don Warkentin was a thoughtful man sculpted by hard work, honesty, and loyalty. His hard work and dedication assisted in providing opportunities for others. As President of the community college, Don Warkentin always made time for his students and athletes. He was a humble man who strived in creating a welcoming atmosphere on the college campus. I can truly say I am grateful to have received an award that represents who Don Warkentin was. Being the first recipient of this scholarship will always have a special place for me. It was memorable being handed this award by Betty and Brooke Warkentin, Don’s wife and daughter. I am forever humble to be a part of the tradition and high standards that this scholarship is held at.
