SMECTEP is a National Science Foundation supported program designed to recruit, nurture, educate and credential students into the rewarding career of secondary math or science teaching. The goal is to better meet the need for role models in our schools by preparing well trained, motivated math and science teachers. This is accomplished by offering well-qualified students an in-depth education in the math and sciences coupled with intensive, individualized teacher preparation program. Benefits to Students SMECTEP provides students with:• excellent course offerings leading to a bachelor's degree in math or science. • personalized credential program in secondary math or science education. • significant financial support. • ongoing campus counseling, tutoring and advising. • mentoring from
experience, local math and science teachers. Application Criteria Students selected for SMECTEP must:• enroll full time at West Hills College . • upon completion of a two-year degree, intend to transfer to Fresno State in a math or science major, or in a math/science teacher credential program. • have an overall GPA of 2.7 or above, with a math or science GPA of at least a 2.7. • complete an application and obtain two letters of recommendation.
