Students

Welcome to our learning communities homepage.  Our learning communities at West Hills College Lemoore consist of two or more classes that are linked.  A theme or topic flows between the courses, and often there are shared assignments for which students receive credit in more than one class.  The instructors work together to create syllabi, schedules, and assignments.  Students enrolled in learning communities consistently do better (in terms of finishing the class and improving their skills) than those who enroll in the courses independently.

For example, in the fall of 2002, in a learning community entitled, "Those Who Can, Teach!," the students enrolled in the learning community (either Education 1 and English 51A or Education 1 and English 1A) had post assessment scores that increased 10% more than students not enrolled in the learning community.*

Each semester we offer at least two learning communities.  Many of these learning communities are focused on a career path like allied health or education.  Click on Classes Offered for more information about current and upcoming learning communities.

*6.9% increase in control group (not enrolled in learning community)

16.6% increase in English 51A and Education 1 learning community students.

12.1% increase in English 1A and Education 1 learning community students.

Students:  Please note that required links between learning community courses must be respected.  If you try to circumvent these links, you may end up being dropped and having to search for a replacement class at the last minute.  We don't want that to happen to you!  If you have any questions, please contact Jacqui Shehorn at 559-925-3653.
