On occasion you will encounter a student with an acquired brain injury (ABI), which is the result of an accident, stroke, tumor or other neurological trauma. The student may show no physical evidence of the impairment, but may demonstrate difficulty with short or long term memory, attention span, vocabulary, motor skills, social skills, impulse control, speech and/or other related characteristic. This student will often share the disability with the instructor, which makes it easy for the instructor to refer the student to DSPS. Common accommodations which may support the brain injured student include: extended time on exams, help in finding a note-taker, use of a tape recorder, and reminding student of course changes. |
