College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP)
CAMP Services

College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) is a federally funded program designed for first-year college students from migrant and seasonal farm-worker families. Established in 1972, CAMP has been available at West Hills College since 2001. CAMP offers pre-college transition and first-year support services to help students develop the skills they need to stay in college and graduate. In addition, the program delivers support services to satisfy the educational and personal needs of each participant.

In advising, we provide a mixture of leadership and career development via advising specialists, staff, tutors/mentors and helpful staff. The CAMP staff dedicates their time not only providing educational advising and tutoring, but also team up with each of our students to explore their chosen academic major. Also, the CAMP staff works cooperatively with instructors to help insure the student’s success.

The social counselor focuses on our students' orientation to campus life. Meetings with our counselors occur in both an individual and group environment. The social counselor provides our students with personal, extracurricular, and/or cultural guidance. Social Counselors act as a liaison for our students with campus clubs and organization, and facilitate the development of a support system to improve study and social skills for college survival.

Financial Aid, the CAMP staff assists each of our students in applying for all available grants. Once a package is completed, the program compares the amount of money the student was awarded with the cost of attending West Hills College and if funds are still missing we may provide a grant for those students who have the greatest unmet need.

Also taking into consideration that CAMP students have additional needs, we provide our student with a borrowing library for them to use. As you may know college text books cost anywhere from $ 200.00 to $ 400.00 per semester; we take care of this bill for our students.

Our students come from Firebaugh, Mendota, Tranquillity, Coalinga, Avenal, Lemoore, and surrounding local areas. Transportation has been a major expense for them. We have set aside funds for all migrant students with transportation challenges.

A typical financial package from the CAMP Program alone could amount to $ 1,000.00 if the student qualifies and applies in a timely manner (tuition, books, health screening, stipends, transportation, etc).
