Did you know that there is a club at West Hills College Lemoore that helps to feed the hungry, distributing donated food twice a week on campus? The Eagle Pantry Club at WHCL collects food and student volunteers distribute it to hungry students and others at WHCL twice a week. And now, the amount they can do for those in need is expanding even further.
This semester the Eagle Food Pantry partnered with Lemoore Middle College High School students as part of a service leadership program. The service leadership focus this semester was combating hunger in the community. As such, they entered an agreement with the Community Food Bank to distribute over 10,000 pounds of fresh produce on a monthly basis on the WHCL campus.
In order to enter this agreement, student volunteers completed the safe food handling certification and volunteered to distribute the produce on campus. Their first distribution was on 11/20 from 10:00 am to noon. People began lining up at 7:00 am that day to receive food and Eagle Pantry was happy to meet the needs of the community.
West Hills College Lemoore faculty and staff rose to the challenge this semester as well. The week of Thanksgiving, they raised almost $2500 through gift basket raffles and donations.
“Those funds will go to the Eagle Pantry to further their good work,” said Dr. Kristin Clark, WHCL President. “We’re happy to help our students and community in the fight against hunger and food insecurity.”
The Eagle Food Pantry has also made other partnerships in the past to help garner food donations, including receiving food donations from Hanford’s Panera Bread. They continue to receive those donations. They also solicit other donations of non-perishable food items.
WHCL student volunteers distribute the donated food twice per week in front of the Learning Resource Center (LRC).
