What is a School Facilities Improvement District and why is our board considering three of them?
This is a great question. As you may know we have attempted three general obligation bonds that cover the entire district and we were not successful. The Special Facilities Improvement District (SFID) is an option to the General Obligation Bond for the entire district. The SFID creates a taxing district within our district. For example, this June we will conduct an election for SFID #1 which includes the northern part of our district. If successful, we will generate about 12 million dollars that will only be spent within that SFID. Lemoore and Coalinga will have their opportunity in November.
The board realizes that they must continually look for ways to create access to higher education. Having updated, modern, attractive facilities for students, faculty and employees is a goal the board takes very seriously. By creating three separate SFIDs the citizens of each area will have an opportunity to assess themselves for improvements in their area.
