Are you a positive force in your workplace?

Jim Tunney asked this question of the 800 or so who attended a recent Visalia business conference, BizTalk ’06.  Tunney, the “dean” of NFL referees, regaled the crowd with humor but his bottom line was that integrity, honesty and treating others with dignity and respect are the true measures that make people successful.

He said there are six essential qualities of a leader he summed up in the acronym LEADER:

L  Love what you do.  It’s the will, not the skill.  Believe in your service to others.

E  Execution.  Step up.  Provide care for your customers.

A  Attitude.  Be a positive force.  Attitude not aptitude determines altitude.

D  Determination.  The will to do it better.  Never give up.

E  Ethics.  The power of integrity.  Just do the right thing.

R  Roundup T*E*A*M* (Together Everyone Accomplishes More).  Each of us needs all of us.  Build teams by building people.

In asking if people are a positive force, he listed the following 10 self-evaluation questions with the answers being:  every day, most days, some days and rarely.

  1. I believe in myself and my abilities.
  2. I am excited about my job.
  3. I am self-motivated.
  4. I set high standard for myself.
  5. I accept criticism as a gift.
  6. I am a team player.
  7. I thank people.
  8. My boss can count on me.
  9. My co-workers can count on me.
  10. I take pride in the way I live my life and do my job.
