running with the bulls

Carlos Dinez, dean of student learning at West Hills College Coalinga, and his son, Brian, 20, toured Terceira, Azores, in June to help celebrate “Sao Joao,” 10 days packed with cultural events and parades to expose visitors to the rich culture of the island.

The run of the bulls in Terceira differs from the famous Pamplona runs for many reasons, Dinez said, “the six bulls are experienced, previously run in touradas, remain within the course for two hours, have the brass covers on the horns, and the people can try their luck at any time.”

In Pamplona, Spain, the bulls will be fought in the afternoon in the arena, they are running towards the arena to be corralled, the intention is to minimize the time of exposure, and to keep them together for the entire run. Dinez said he had run with the bulls “when I was younger.”

A full account of the pair’s bullish adventure is planned for the next issue of “Dialalog.”
