Ask the Chancellor

Dr. Gornick how do you come up with the list of building projects for the bond?

This is a good question because it gives me an opportunity to remind everyone about our bond election on Tuesday June 6th.

The simple answer is that it is a combination of what each college desires and what can be funded by the state.

The longer answer is that the process involves the state, the colleges, our facilities planner and architect. Everything begins with the educational plan for each college. The ed plan drives the facilities plan. The State determines the kind of facilities projects that they will fund. Classrooms and labs are funded first and given the highest priority by the State. The State approves our projects based upon the current utilization of space and our enrollment.

When the colleges compile their lists, the facilities planner “sizes” the list to fit a bond amount. In some cases we may have more projects than can be reasonably funded by the State or a local bond. In that case the colleges are asked to prioritize the list.
