West Hills College Lemoore gets nod on accreditation follow up report

In the college administration world, few things are as critical as the acceptance of a college for accreditation.  During a six year process, the accreditation review examines all aspects of the operations of a college and its service to students.

Mid-way through that cycle, a Mid-Year Report is submitted by the college with responses to the previous visits’ recommendations for areas of needed improvement.  WHCL was asked to submit a Follow-Up Report to substantiate progress on those recommendations.

West Hills College Lemoore President Don Warkentin learned last week that his college’s Follow-Up Report has been accepted by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.

In a notification letter send by Dr. Barbara A. Beno, president of ACCJC, she said, “Professional self-regulation is the most effective means of assuring institutional integrity, effectiveness and quality.”

She noted that the next comprehensive evaluation of West Hills College Lemoore will take place during the spring of 2011.

Warkentin said the Follow-Up report focused on three recommendations from the 2006 accreditation that was issued to the college.   They dealt with:

  • Changes in policies and policies and procedures that were necessary due to the transition to a multi-college district.  Prior to 2006, West Hills College Lemoore operated under the accreditation of West Hills College Coalinga.
  • Ensuring that all programs identify measurable goals and objects and use research data for the timely implementation of improvements.
  • Steps to identify and assess student learning outcomes.

“We are delighted to have our Follow-Up Report accepted without comment,” Warkentin said.  “This validates that we’re on track in serving students with a top-quality education.”

Copies of all accreditation reports are available in the WHCL library and administrative offices.
