West Hills College board appoints bond oversight committee for the Coalinga area

With the passage of an $11.6 million local higher education bond last June, the West Hills Community College District is required by law to establish a committee of local citizens to oversee spending of the bond proceeds.

Chancellor Frank Gornick said that the committee members include:

  • Ralph Gorrill, owner of Music Alley in Coalinga, representative of a business organization.
  • James Yates, warden at Pleasant Valley State Prison, representative of a business organization.
  • Dixie Welborn, member of Coalinga Senior Citizen Center, representative of a senior group.
  • Lisa Carrana, West Hills College Coalinga student involved in Associated Student Body, representative of student active in community college group.
  • Mike Isaac, member of West Hills College Coalinga Athletic Boosters, representative of an organization that supports the college.

Gornick also said that there must be a minimum of two members of the community-at-large.  Filling those positions are:

  • Ron Lander, mayor of the City of Coalinga.
  • Richard Hill, owner of Fat Jack’s Diner in Coalinga.

The group is required to meet at least once each year to review bond projects and expenditures.  Gornick said he anticipates that the board may actually meet more frequently than that due to a high level of local interest in the college and its projects.

The committee is still missing a representative from a bona-fide taxpayers association. Anyone interested in serving is invited to contact his office at 559.934.2102 or email donnaisaac@whccd.edu.
