Local scholarships result of Bernard Osher Foundation donation
Each year, ten West Hills College students will be awarded scholarships up to $1,000 each thanks to a recent contribution by the Bernard Osher Foundation. Community college students throughout the state will have the same opportunity as a result of the $25 million gift.
Each of the 110 community colleges throughout the state will be able to award five scholarships, which means that West Hills College Coalinga and West Hills College Lemoore will have five scholarships each.
Barbara Caganich, executive director of the West Hills Community College District Foundation, which will administer the scholarships for the district, said that the scholarships are for returning students who have already completed at least 24 units. They must enroll in at least six units and the scholarship will be prorated for less than full time.
The money can be used to for books, uniforms, tools, lab fees or for other equipment that may be required for classes, Caganich said.
She added that the scholarships are endowed and will be offered in perpetuity.
Caganich also said that the Osher Foundation has made an additional offer. For every $2 donated locally, the Osher Foundation will match $1 and she added that named scholarships are available with a $25,000 contribution that will garner the $1 contribution from Osher.
Applications for this year’s scholarships are due April 3rd. Details are available at: http://westhillscollege.com/district/foundation/scholarships/index.asp.
