Annual College Seen winners announced by Foundatijon for California Community Colleges
SACRAMENTO—September 2, 2009—An image depicting a single mother balancing home life and school work was selected from among 243 entries to win this year’s College Seen, an annual photo contest co-sponsored by the Foundation for California Community Colleges, its CollegeBuys program, and Adobe® that draws hundreds of entries from community college students throughout the state each year.
Pedro Trevino, a student at West Hills Community College in Coalinga, was the photographer behind the grand prize photo, winning $500 from the Foundation and an Adobe Creative Suite® 4 Design Premium package, courtesy of Adobe®. The subject in his photo, entitled “You are no barrier, you are a motive,” is his sister, a single mother who returned to school after a divorce in order to ensure a brighter future for her family. The image, showing the woman holding her child while she studies late into the night, offers an accurate reflection of the challenges many community college students face, particularly in the current economy.
“This is truly inspirational to see that a ... single mother can experience drastic change and achieve her goals so that she may set a positive example and provide for her children in the future,” said Trevino in describing his photo.
The goal of College Seen is to create a portfolio of photographs that illustrate the community college experience, as seen through the eyes of the students. In addition to Trevino, five other California Community College students have been awarded first place in separate categories, all selected based on their visual impact, technical execution, style, and category relevancy:
“College Seen has become a great way for California Community College students to visually depict their experiences on the college campus,” said Dr. Paul Lanning, President and CEO of the Foundation. “The Foundation for California Community Colleges is proud to continue providing this opportunity for students to display their talents while telling a powerful story.”
The winning photos are available at www.CollegeSeen.org, and will also be published this fall in Affinity, the California Community College alumni magazine.
