President Scholar Profile
Fernando Gutierrez
Fernando Gutierrez

Fernando Gutierrez is proud of the fact that he is helping his family save money while attending West Hills College Coalinga as a President’s Scholar. “I was accepted at several CSUs but I didn’t qualify for financial aid or grants. I worked hard in high school but I didn’t get anything,” the 2012 Tranquillity High School graduate said.

Beyond the financial savings, Fernando likes the small class sizes at West Hills College Coalinga. “I came from a small school and the classes here are small. The instructors are willing to help and teachers really care about you and want you to succeed in the classroom.”

My classes here will transfer to a four-year school and I will have saved my family a lot of money

He says that he would highly recommend the program to other students who have good grades. “My classes here will transfer to a four-year school and I will have saved my family a lot of money. My tuition is free and the $250 I receive for books each semester paid for three of my books this semester. I share my fourth book with another President’s Scholar from Tranquillity. She is paying for it with her scholarship.”

The kinesiology major, who was on a Tranquillity High valley championship soccer team and two valley championship cross country teams, was all league in baseball and football and will play baseball for WHCC. While he is undecided on where he plans to transfer, he sees a career in sports. “I can’t imagine not being on the field doing something related to sports.”
