Last Saturday, the Laney College Eagles (3-0) beat the West Hills College Falcons (1-2) by a score of 38 to 28.  The Eagles came out fast in the first quarter scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter.  Early in the second quarter, the Falcons got on the board on a 1 yard run by freshman running back, Shane Cams.  From that point on, both teams exchanged score through the third quarter.  At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the score was 31 to 28, in favor of the Eagles.  Late in the fouth quarter, Laney College runningback, Dominique Ferrel, plunged across the goal line from 1 yard out the seal the Falcons fate.
In the loss, there were several bright spots for the Falcons.  Sophomore wide receiver, Travis Jacubowski, had 105 yards on 5 carries and 2 touchdowns.  “When Travis has the ball in his hands, he’s a very explosive player.  He’s a sophomore and we expect those kinds of games from Travis”, said Falcon Head Coach, Cal Tincher.   The Falcons began the game without starting quarterback, Tate Humphrey and starting running back Randy Maynes.  After two games, Maynes was amoung the leading rushers in the state.  Both were listed as probable prior to the game because if injuries sustained a week before in their game against Modesto Junior College.  Back up quarterback, Andre Miller started the game and had a difficult time moving the offense down the field.  “Andre will be a very good quarter for us in the future.  At this point, it very difficult to get thrown out there with limited college experience,” commented Coach Tincher.
On Defense, Roderick Oliver scored on a blocked punt, and Josh Heard had an interception also.
Freshman Pete Borjas, connected on all four extra points and punter, Pete Sellecchia had 6 punts for a 41.5 average.  “There are signs of improvement across the board.  We can’t afford to take steps backwards, and expect to win games against top rated teams.  We have to be ready to play every single Saturday to be competitive with the schedule we have,” commented Shane Keck, defensive coordinator.
Next Saturday, the Falcons are home again for a 1 PM contest against Diablo Valley College.  “Diablo Valley is very good defensively, and more of a finesse type of offense.  Our game plan with be different, but our goal will remain the same; we need to get this win,” Coach Tincher.
